The Android Notepad Evernote Resource Page

The popular Evernote application provides the Android user with a comprehensive set of innovative note taking tools.

FEATURES

An Android user isn’t just limited to taking traditional type-in text notes. Using Evernote, he can upload a files from his SD card, take an audio note when he is driving down the road and can not type, or even attach a snapshot from the Android camera.

A key Google-like feature of the service allows users to search for items in notes or even for text taken from a snapshop. The provides the user with the ability to Google his life experience provided that he has taken the time to use Evernote to record those experiences.

Using the Evernote interface the user may upload pictures of his business cards as he receives them, take a picture of a restaurant menu or manually input an idea that he does not want to forget. Once submitted to Evernote, these notes may be categorized with the Evernote tagging system. They may also be searched with the Evernote search tool.

WHAT IS COOL

Evernote notes may include embedded location data. This data allows the Android owner to view and access his notes based on the location from which the note was initially inputted. This provides another way to find hard-to-classify notes and the locations where they were entered.

SYNCING / ON THE CLOUD

The notes are stored in the Evernote Web cloud where they can be retrieved from other mobile devices and computers through the Evernote web portal.

Users don’t even have to use the Evernote app to submit a note. A note can be sent to the user’s Evernote account through email. Or, a user may choose to connect a scanner to an Evernote account and forward all scanned documents to Evernote.

SHARING

An Evernote end user could choose to share her note with other via either Twitter or Facebook. A user may also decide to take advantage of the email sharing feature to share the note through his email account such as Gmail.

Evernote users may also share individual notebooks with other Evernote users. This allows other users to see the notes entered by the owner of the note. Premium subscribers can edited shared notebooks thus enabling collaborative note editing. This collaboration opens up a world of opportunities such as the coordination of event planning, collaberative project structuring or creating a shared presentation.

DEFICIENCIES

Evernote is clearly the leader among note-taking apps. It isn’t without criticism. For instance, the app has received criticism in the past for not allow users to schedule appointment reminders. However, this is no good reason to avoid installing the free version of this app. In fact, according to an article in the December 2011 edition of Inc. Magazine, Evernote draws more than 40,000 new users each day.

API - DEVELOPER ECOSYSTEM AND THIRD PARTY APPS

Evernote provides web developers with an API and a strong support system. This allows developers to build products and incorporate them as part of the Evernote ecosystem. The Evernote developer's site is located at dev.evernote.com.

The creation of the developer ecosystem enables Evernote fans to purchase a series of secondary apps which interact with Evernote. This extends Evernote’s functionality and provides users with a host of additional capabilities some of which may require an additional subscription or purchase fee.

Each year Evernote hosts a special competition through which developers compete for recognition and cash prizes. Evernote awards the developers who produce the best third-party apps to integrate with the Evernote ecosystem.

This innovative system allows Evernote to provide much more value to the user than would otherwise be available through just a stand-alone platform. The system provides Evernote with an innovative community of interested parties and an advantage over apps that do not have this same ecosystem.

PRICING

Evernote may be downloaded from the Google Play store without cost. Evernote operates according to a freemium model. The free version of the app contains many of the features available through the premium version.

The premium version of Evernote costs $5 each month, and provides additional Web space for note storage, a note history feature and is ad free. And, users are allowed to edit their notes offline if necessary. Premium version users may also assign a security lock to the app in order to protect their notes.

AWARDS

During the January 2012 BestAppEver.com contest, Evernote finished first in the Best App Bargain category. The app also finished third in the Best Productivity App category.
