Who has the better notepad app? Catch Notes or Evernote? There is no doubt that Evernote is the most popular note taking app for the Android. But, does Evernote really deserve the title of most popular?

These apps both offer very similar functionality at a similar pricing scheme. Both operate according to the freemium model with the first tier of service provided at no cost. This means you can try out both the apps for free to decide which you like the best.

Both apps allow for cloud-based storage of types, photographic and audio notes. They also enable collaborative editing so multiple users can work on notes together and feature classification systems for organizing information by category.

Realistically speaking while both apps are very similar here is what may be the two biggest difference between the two apps.

Evernote has been known for its innovative work in the area of both speech and scan to text. This type of functionality was perhaps the catalyst which initially leveraged Evernote into the most popular position. Specifically the ability to search through text generated from an image proved a powerful early feature of Evernote. Users could take a picture of text and then search for a term in that image.

In recent weeks Evernote has placed speech to text as a feature of the Android app. Users may activate the speech to text in order to transcribe the audio from a speech note. These types of innovative features have been well received by Android owners who have made Evernote the very popular app it is today.

Here is the second reason for why Evernote has such an advantage over Catch Notes. Evernote has leveraged its popularity to build out a very robust developer infrastructure. This means there are likely hundreds of other apps that are now using Evernote to provide features and store content. The user should read through the posts on this site’s blog to see examples of these apps. For example, in a blog post from just a week or so ago this site featured a list of third party apps which use Evernote to enhance the experience of their users.

Catch Notes simply does not have the same standing to leverage this same type of functionality from the developer community. They have built their own version of the open infrastructure and haven't at all ceded the concept of involving third party developers to Evernote. But, it is hard for the Catch Notes ecosystem to keep up.

Catch Notes provides what may be the foremost alternative to Evernote but those who use Catch Note exclusively may not be able to utilize the complete services of many of those apps that are now being built around the Evernote ecosystem.

Users should take all of this into account when deciding which system to use. Fortunately, as previously mentioned both apps may be used for free for a while. But, the choice to pick an app should be carefully made as once a user stores a considerable amount of data with the provider of his choice it could be a pain to attempt to export and reimport the data on the site of a new provider.
